My son went fishing for the very first time and had a blast!
He has been asking to go ever since. We have a small plastic fishing pole and these little fish for the bathtub that he has taken out and been playing with non-stop. It isn't much of a game for an almost three year old, but he just really wanted to fish. So of course, Mommy to the Rescue! I had seen the fishing games around the blogosphere. One of the most popular is Counting Coconuts Felt Counting Fish. I also knew of Helping Little Hands Going Fishing for Numbers. Both were cute. I had the kids home with me while working and needed something to keep my son busy for a little while, so I broke out the felt, buttons, yarn, paperclips and some needle and thread and we busted out a fishing game in under 20 minutes! I free-cut the fish, sewed on a button for an eye, and put the paperclip on as a mouth. Tied some yarn to a stick, hot glued it in place, added a magnet to the other end and we were done. We ended up taking a marker and adding a few dots and things to the fish, but nothing fancy.
He went on to play with this new toy for an hour! We took a break for lunch and he ran right back to it. We then had a competition to see who could fish out the most fish from a bucket. Of course he won. ;) When my daughter got home she joined in the fun too. And what do you do when you catch fish? Eat them of course!
(BTW - Did you notice the dog and cat squabbling in the top right corner of this pic? I think they wanted to play too!)
Happy Fishing!
I love improvised games that the kids love... that last pic is just priceless!

So funny! I did a fishing activity for my church class and wanted to find a way to adapt it so my kids could enjoy it at home too. I was thinking making felt fish would be fun and when I saw this it sealed the deal! They turned out SO cute!
ReplyDeleteMy munchkin has yet to go fishing, but is waiting as patiently as possible (kind of). This game should prove handy until the time when we get our butts in gear and go camping. I really like the cat/dog fight too....love those kinds of moments. :-)
ReplyDeleteSuch a fun and simple activity and one that keeps the kids happily entertained, too.
ReplyDeleteSo glad you liked this idea. Thanks for linking back to me. :)
