5 HOW TO: Reader Submitted Ideas to Add Watermark to Photos

June 5, 2011

Last weeks post on how to add a watermark using Picnik was a bit controversly and I never expected it to be!  It appears some people find it pretentious when people watermark their images, that and find it obtrusive.  I heard from many that watermark does not safeguard you.  I do agree that a watermark does not safeguard you entirely, but it does provide you some measure of security.  Someone cannot steal your entire post, photos and all and pass it off as their own if it is obviously stamped with your name!  I want to share my crafts and ideas with you and are happy to share photos of the process and love when you recreate them, but the photos were taken my me and should not be passed off as another's work, that is just bad form!

Anyway - I inspired some of my readers to share their tips and they were awesome enough to let me post them here!  So here are two more ways to add watermarks to your photos (for those who want to.  For those who don't, please skip this post).

Laura from ON{the laundry}LINE shared an super easy way with Live Writer:
Another - and easier - way to add watermarks, is if you write with Windows Live Writer, after you upload a picture you click the Format tab on top and add a watermark, and then click Set As Default and all your images will have watermarks as you set them automatically. I like that I don't have to think about it and its just done. I don't think my watermarks are the least but obtrusive, and if anyone does, they don't have to read my blog. :)

If you don't have Live Writer, here is another way:
Nitya from Nitya's Knits Quoin shares how to add a watermark using Picasa 3:

1. Down the free software Picassa3 from the net on your desktop. The following is the link
http://picasa.google.com/ It is a free software
2. Create a new folder for the photos you want to add the watermark

First Method

1. Select a picture from your file

2. Right click on the picture and select the tab ‘open with’ and you will get a drop down for you to select.
Then click on view with Picasa viewer.

3. Your picture will open in a new file and you have the Picasa editor tools

4. There are two options to use the edit button. Go to the edit button on the tool tabs or right click on the
picture and edit through Picasa edit . Now you will have a new page of Picasa and all its tools in the left
panel of the picture

5. You have a various menus for you to use:
- Basic Fixes
- Tuning
- Effects
I normally use the Basic Fixes to create the watermark. You can try all other features to fine tune your
pictures according to your requirements

6. Create a watermark
- Select the ABC text button

- You will get a check box – “Type anywhere to add a text
Now add your choice of words or your blog details or your name.
Then you will notice a circle like indicator
This indicator arrow will help us to do the following options
- Font Type – Arial
- Font size - 12
- Style - B [bold], I [itilized], or U [underline]
- Alignment – here you can choose the area or location where you want to place the watermark
- Color selection: There are 3 option Choose both the ‘T’ and if you want in multi color effect then you
can chose the middle one where the color will not be filled
- Transparency - You can select the way your color want to be keep it to the maximum
- Then tick mark the Apply button [here you have the option of clearing all changes or canceling]

- After all required changes have been done then go to file menu and click on “SAVE AS” and give a new
name to your picture. This is very important because your original picture will remain in tact.

Second Method
Another way to create a watermark without any alterations is

Go to the Export tab on the file menu
As soon you click on the export tab you will get a window export to folder

It will have the following options

1. Export location Where the picture is located
2. Name of the exported folder – the name of the new folder created by you
3. Image size – adjust as per your requirements to ….. Pixels
4. Image quality - change as per your requirement . – I choose automatic –this will preserves original
quality of the picture
5. Watermark – click on this box [add watermark] There is a space provided below this and here you can
give your http details, your name as desired by you.
6. Then click on the export tab and you have successfully added your watermark. Sine this is an inbuilt one
it will appear at right hand corner of the picture

Now your watermark will appear on the picture
Hope this tutorial was beneficial to one and all.
Please do get back to me if you have any doubts and I shall explain to you.

  2. I would have never thought this was controversial either. I think that people that find it pretentious might not have ever had their image "swiped".

Another great thing about watermarks, is that it gives a reference where the project (if it's a DYI-type of project) came from. Before Pinterest, I had a folder of images I would find in blogland of "projects for the future". The ones without the watermark have now left me wondering where in the world I found that tutorial.

    So watermark away, I say.

  4. A controversy.. and I missed it???... dang!.. I water mark all my photos.. I mean I took it, I am proud enough of it to put it out there.. if someone wants to steal it and then take the time to obscure the WM then fine.. otherwise I would like people to know it's my work...
